LANCASTER, Ohio (WCMH) — The owners of a hardware store that is closing after nearly eight decades have announced a celebration to thank the community.

Slater’s Hardware will host its “Community Gratitude Party” on Friday and Saturday, according to a news release. The timing has special significance for the family, who noted that Jan. 26 was their grandmother Henrietta’s birthday.

The news that the Lancaster business would be ceasing operation at the end of February after 78 years was revealed earlier this month.

“I thought it was the worst decision we’ve ever made, but it’s the happiest decision we’ve ever made, too,” Lou Ann Slater Weisenstein told NBC4 in the initial report. “It is time for me to retire and to find some other avenues and some other adventures in my life with my family, but not with Slater’s hardware. We will miss everybody.”

Customers are encouraged to “stop by the store to reminisce and enjoy some refreshments together.” A local pizza chain, Cristy’s Pizza, will be donating pizzas for the event.

Store merchandise will be 50% off and a portion of the weekend’s sales will be donated to MD Anderson, a cancer treatment center, in honor of the family’s sister, Beth Ann Slater.
