Family in Penn Township holds final clothes drive in honor of stillborn child

A Penn Township family wrapped up a tradition of generosity started in honor of their stillborn daughter.

According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, Greg and Denise Capoccioni started the drive seven years ago to help students in need.

Denise Capoccioni gave birth to a stillborn daughter, Ava, in 2011. The first year of the drive, Ava would have been in kindergarten.

This year, their daughter would have been in sixth grade and the family is holding their final drive.

The couple and their adopted daughter, Gia, pick a day when people drop off clothes or money to purchase essentials.

The family then sends the clothes to various school districts. The donations are placed in a bag with a note memorializing Ava and her birthday.

Penn-Trafford, where Greg Capoccioni is an assistant principal, has participated in the event. Other school districts benefiting from the effort are Norwin, Gateway, Hempfield, Jeannette, McKeesport, Wilkinsburg, North Hills, Allegheny Valley, Shaler, Rockwood, Shade-Central, Somerset and North Star.

“Every kid should have a brand-new outfit to go back to school,” Denise Capoccioni said.
