A family-run Illinois grocery store is looking to find success 'the Milwaukee way' in the Third Ward

After finding success in Illinois, family-run Go Grocer has chosen Milwaukee for its first store outside of its home state.

“We’ve had success with Go Grocer in Chicago and now we hope to do that in Milwaukee, but we want to do it the Milwaukee way,” said John Rivera, owner and operator of the new Milwaukee location in the Historic Third Ward.

The new grocery store opened in January. Here's what to know about what it offers.

Go Grocer focuses on fresh produce and local products

Go Grocer offers fresh meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as fresh produce and the usual grocery store staples like bread, eggs and milk.

Rivera said the store emphasizes local products. Go Grocer will have products from local farmers markets as well as Milwaukee favorites like ice cream from Purple Door, peanut butter from Peanut Butter & Jelly Deli and, of course, local beers.

Go Grocer also offers a variety of gluten free and vegan products and they are always willing to add to what they have.

“This is a store for Milwaukee. We want people to feel comfortable coming in and saying, 'I want this product from this local spot,' and we will try our hardest to get that in our store for them,” Rivera said.

Third Ward location was chosen because it didn't have a grocery store

The new store opened at 415 E. Menomonee St.

This location was chosen specifically by the Rivera brothers for its potential.

The Third Ward includes restaurants, boutiques, condos and apartments. However, the nearest grocery store is Metro Market about a mile away.

“We saw that the Third Ward was lacking options for groceries so we want to come in and give them a quality store with quality products that will fill that need,” Rivera said.

This Milwaukee location is the first Go Grocer outside of Illinois

Go Grocer was founded in 2008 by Greek immigrants, and brothers Paul and Greg Stellatos. The Milwaukee location will also be family-run, but this time by brothers John and Edgar Rivera — also immigrants as their family is from Mexico.

“We have been lifelong friends with the Stellatos, we consider them cousins so we feel like we are just extending the family business,” Rivera said.

The Milwaukee location is the 17th Go Grocer store. The company is looking to continue expanding outside of Illinois.
