When you think of chalk, fun afternoons full of hopscotch and playground illustrations probably come to mind. But one family in the U.K. recently took its chalk game to the next level to drum up some joy in their community.

Inspired by someone who'd used chalk to color part of their home exterior, small business owner Fern Taylor recruited her daughters Arabella, 4, and Matilda, 2, as well as her partner, Marco DeFazio, to help.

"I did the bottom half with a bit of help from the girls, and my partner got the ladders out and did the top half," she told Woman's Day. Six hours and around 40 jumbo sticks of chalk later, the Taylor house had become a beautiful rainbow in the middle of their classic brick street.

Does Taylor have any plans to expand the rainbow to neighboring houses? Not at the moment. "The neighbors have joked about doing theirs, which would be amazing," Taylor says. "But I think we’re all chalked out."

In the meantime, Taylor says her family has received many compliments on the look of the house, and that people from around the neighborhood have been enjoying it. "Everyone is really lovely about it, smiling, taking pictures and videos, and stopping to say how much they love it," she says. "We even had an ambulance stop and clap whilst we were doing it!"

The time and creative energy put into the project was definitely worth it for Taylor and her family. "It has been really lovely," Taylor says of the kind feedback she has received after the project. "We’ve really come closer as a community."
