Famous Beluga Whale Greets Volunteers With 'High Five'

The world’s most famous beluga whale, Hvaldimir, showed off high-fiving skills earlier this year, when he skidded past a boat of volunteers near Flatanger, Norway.

Video by Dr Megan Mullin, a volunteer with the group OneWhale, shows the tame sea creature approaching the boat with a fin raised, before skidding right in front of the camera.

Mullin, who traveled to Norway in September with Team Hvaldimir, said on Instagram that she had felt “emotions ranging from pure bliss and joy, to sadness and serious concern for [his] safety.”

The whale was dubbed a Russian spy after he appeared off Norway’s coast wearing a Russian harness in 2019, and is well-known for his friendly interactions with humans.

OneWhale has been working toward the creation of a reserve that would allow Hvaldimir to have protection from tourists, and allow him to live his life in the most natural way possible. Credit: Megan Mullin via Storyful
