FAMU baseball looking to put behind a SWAC standing-implicating series loss

A sense of urgency is needed for Florida A&M baseball.

The Rattlers (13-16, 7-2 SWAC) lost a three-game weekend series on the road to in-state rivals Bethune-Cookman. Going 1-2 against the Wildcats dropped FAMU from first to third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East division behind Alabama State and Bethune-Cookman.

A two-run homer in the eighth inning by second baseman Joseph Pierini led to FAMU's sole win of the B-CU series in its opener last Friday.

The Rattlers also played a midweek game at Mercer on Tuesday, but fell 19-7.

Next, FAMU will host Jackson State at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee for a three-game conference series. The schedule will run from Thursday-Saturday due to Sunday's Easter holiday.

The Tigers (16-10, 3-6 SWAC) went 2-1 in their last SWAC series against Mississippi Valley, but lost a midweek game at New Orleans.

FAMU went 1-5 in total against JSU a season ago, dropping both series against the SWAC foe.

FAMU stacked four consecutive victories before narrowly faltering to Jacksonville Wednesday in a midweek contest.

Pitcher Lauryn Peppers was named the SWAC Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 against MVSU. She struck out 15 batters in 14 innings and held MVSU to a .149 batting average.

Outfielder Melkayla Irvis has shined offensively as she is tied for second in the nation with six triples. She's one of six players in the country that have over five triples.

Next for FAMU is Alabama A&M for a three-game series. The matchup will begin on Friday and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (15-14, 6-6 SWAC) lost, 2-1 in their last SWAC series against Jackson State.

The last time FAMU and AAMU met was in February's HBCU Softball Tournament where the Rattlers outlasted the Bulldogs, 4-3.
