FAMU baseball dominates Grambling State in first game of Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas Classic

LAWRENCEVILLE, GASenior Hunter Viets was mowing people down on Friday, punching out eight Grambling hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the Florida A&M Rattlers past the Tigers 17-2.

In addition to his eight strikeouts, Viets (1-0) went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and walking one for FAMU (4-7). Senior Zach Morea also made an impact on the mound for the Rattlers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Rattlers were led by senior Ty Hanchey, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Freshman Joseph Pierini put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a triple, a walk and three RBI. Sophomore Will Brown also helped out for FAMU, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a double, three walks and two RBI.

How it Happened

The Rattlers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. FAMU scored three runs, including one driven in on a home run by Hanchey.

The Rattlers then held the Tigers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Sophomore Jalen Niles came across to score the lone run of the inning for FAMU, which brought the Rattlers lead to 4-0.

Grambling narrowed FAMU's lead to 4-2 before the Rattlers stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the seventh inning. Niles' bases-clearing double sent in all three runs for the Rattlers.

FAMU kept the Tigers scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Rattlers scored 10 runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Pierini, bringing the FAMU advantage to 17-2. The score remained 17-2 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers coasted to the win.
