FAMU basketball splits even with Southern in homecourt finale doubleheader

TALLAHASSEE ― The Florida A&M women's basketball team out-rebounded the Southern Lady Jaguars 42-33 on the way to a 57-50 victory at home Monday.

The Rattlers (6-22, 4-13 SWAC) had two players score in double figures, led by Dylan Horton, who had 19 points. Ahriahna Grizzle added 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals and Ivet Subirats added nine points.

Paulla Weekes pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for FAMU, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.

FAMU's defense held Southern to only 30.4 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-2, FAMU went on a 5-0 run with 8:07 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Subirats, to take a 7-3 lead. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-15 advantage.

Southern rallied to take a 26-22 lead before FAMU went on a 9-0 run starting at the 4:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Horton, to take a 31-26 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. FAMU forced three Southern turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.

After intermission, FAMU held on to its advantage and owned a 41-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. FAMU scored two fast break points in the quarter.

FAMU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 57-50 with 14 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. FAMU took advantage of six Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.

FAMU men's basketball

The FAMU men's basketball team fell to the Southern Jaguars 60-58 at home Monday on P.J. Byrd's game-winning shot with only two seconds left on the clock.

Noah Meren led the Rattlers (7-21, 5-12 SWAC) with six points, eight rebounds and four steals. Jordan Tillmon also tacked on eight points, four assists and two steals and Dimingus Stevens chipped in as well with 16 points from the bench.

The FAMU offense made hay from deep, pouring in eight threes on 25 attempts. Stevens hit four treys for the Rattlers in the contest.

FAMU's defense held Southern to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Jaguars did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while FAMU cleared 30 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-2, FAMU went on an 8-0 run with 17:48 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Stevens, to take a 10-4 lead. The Rattlers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 32-30.

FAMU narrowed its deficit to 35-34 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Byron Smith's jumper, to seize a 42-35 lead with 14:30 to go in the contest. Southern re-asserted control, outscoring the Rattlers 25-16 the rest of the way to hand FAMU the 60-58 loss. FAMU capitalized on eight Southern turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
