FAMU basketball teams leaves Grambling State empty-handed

GRAMBLING, LA ― The Florida A&M men's basketball team got a 39-point showing from the bench, but fell 62-57 to the Grambling Tigers on the road Monday.

The Rattlers (2-12, 0-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Dimingus Stevens, who had 13 points and two steals. Jordan Tillmon tacked on 11 points, six rebounds and two steals and Chase Barrs helped out with 11 points off of the bench.

Led by Saiyd Burnside's two offensive rebounds, FAMU did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.

FAMU's defense held Grambling to only 38.5 percent shooting from the field, including 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After falling behind 23-20, FAMU went on a 7-0 run with 6:28 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Tillmon, to take a 27-23 lead. The Rattlers then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 34-30 advantage. FAMU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 34 points.

Grambling proceeded to take a 47-45 lead before FAMU went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Byron Smith's three, to seize a 50-47 lead with 9:51 to go in the contest. Grambling re-asserted control, outscoring the Rattlers 15-7 the rest of the way to hand FAMU the 62-57 loss. FAMU got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 13 of its 23 total points.

Game Notes

The Rattlers held the Tigers to only 38.5 percent shooting from the field.

The FAMU bench made an impact by adding 39 points to its scoring output.

Dimingus Stevens and Chase Barrs came off the bench to score 13 and 11 points, respectively.

FAMU cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 10 offensive boards in the game.

FAMU women's basketball falls to Grambling State in overtime

Florida A&M women's basketball (2-12) fell 71-68 to Grambling State in overtime, dropping to 0-3 to start SWAC play. Dylan Horton had a team-high 19 points.

The Rattlers held an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Dylan Horton's three before the buzzer gave the Rattlers a 21-10 advantage.

The Tigers cut the Rattlers lead with a 7-0 run three minutes into the second quarter. FAMU answered back with an 8-0 run. The Rattlers leveraged that into a 33-29 halftime lead.

In the third, GSU hit free throws to tie the game at 33. The Tigers took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer to make it 36-35 in the third.

The Tigers led 57-49, their largest lead of the game midway through the fourth. The Rattlers battled to tie the game at 59 late in the fourth on a three by Ivet Subirats, followed by an and-one by Ahriahna Grizzle.

The game was tied 62 all at the end of regulation. The Rattlers were outscored 9-6 in the overtime period.
