FAMU DRS' Logan, Donaldson-Fountain among the many Big Bend athletes signing NLI's

With the school year coming to a close, the last bunch of senior athletes in the Big Bend senior athletes are making sure that the ink on their pens hasn't dried up for one last round of national letter of intent signings.

In these final few weeks of the school year, athletes from north to south have made the intent official to compete at their chosen school for the next four years. On the south side, two FAMU DRS star athletes made their commitments official in front of friends, family, coaches, and teachers.

Star dual-athlete and 2021 All-Big Bend Flag Football Player of the Year Ameari Logan announced her intent to play flag football at Warner Univerisity in Lake Wales, Florida, which is located southeast of Lakeland. Logan said she was appreciative of every offer, between flag football and basketball, and it came down to how much of her education was going to be paid for.

"I knew I could do both basketball and flag, but it was either a full ride or a partial ride," Logan said. "Honestly, I love both sports, but I started falling in love with flag football once it's started growing. If I can do it in basketball, why can't I do it in flag football? I chose flag football because it's growing so much and I love to compete in it."

Flag football is on the rise around the country, especially in the southeast, which has created opportunities for athletes to receive a scholarship to play at the college level. It's something that wasn't really a thing when Logan started playing.

Logan will study sports medicine at Warner and is excited to be one of the first from the Big Bend to have the opportunity to play flag football under a scholarship.

"It means a lot," Logan said. "Not everyone has the opportunity and not many people know that flag football is growing big. I feel great about the decision and I'm excited to see what it's like. I'm excited to go to the next level and compete."

Donaldson-Fountain's signing ceremony was an emotional one for him and the family surrounding him. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, and the restrictions that were placed on athletes competing, for a long time Donaldson-Fountain didn't think that he had the opportunity to play college basketball.

It was a goal that he had expressed to Rattlers head coach Dione Desir, and he ended up accomplishing it. Donaldson-Fountain inked his next four years to play basketball at Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida, which so happens to be only five miles from Warner University.

"It's been a privilege to sign," Donaldson-Fountain said. "I was crying in my kitchen when they told me that they wanted me to sign, so it's a blessing that I'm able to sign with Webber."

In addition to playing hoops, Donaldson-Fountain will be studying criminal justice and wants to be a law enforcement officer after college, focused on human trafficking issues.

Logan and Donaldson-Fountain were only two of the many Big Bend athletes that have signed with college athletic programs for the next four years recently. Here is where other Big Bend athletes are going.
