The Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law has awarded the Joel Stern Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Pipeline Scholarship to second-year student Rachel Smith.

“It has been a challenging year for me,” said Smith. “This award is special because it will allow me to focus on my education, and will grant me the opportunity to continue to be a part of a plan to foster diversity in the legal field. I am beyond grateful.”

Smith, originally from Plant City, considered pursuing a legal career, focusing on inequities in social justice and health care after her family members experienced major health challenges.

After attending the George Floyd memorial service in Minnesota, she said that it sparked her interest in pursuing a career in law.

Scholarship committee chair, Marie Maurice, said that Smith is a true advocate for the community through the work she’s completed.

“She strives to tell someone’s story through advocacy work,” she said. “Rachel’s sincerity and openness about her struggles and goals was inspiring. We are happy to support Rachel on her journey with the NAMWOLF Joel Stern Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Pipeline Scholarship.”

The $10,000 award provides financial support to students who contribute to the diversity of their law school student body as they pursue their legal careers.

Second- and third-year law students who come from diverse backgrounds are eligible to apply.
