Fandom Fest, wood carving and more things to do in Franklin County in April

There's a variety of things to do in April around Franklin County.

More events are taking place as the weather warms up with the season in Franklin County. Check out some of these.

First Fridays begin in April

Held on the first Friday of each month in the spring, summer and into fall, First Friday is a way for towns to showcase their downtown businesses, local artists and food vendors. First Friday kicks off April 7 in Chambersburg and Waynesboro.

Chambersburg highlight: There will be an Umbrella Parade, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the 11/30 Visitors Center on Memorial Square. Individuals and groups can enter umbrellas decked out in creativity. The winning entry will get $50 Downtown Dollars, which can be spent at participating businesses in downtown Chambersburg. First Fridays run through October.

Waynesboro highlight: Mainstreet Waynesboro will host an Easter egg hunt featuring downtown businesses from 4 to 6:30 p.m. It is open to kids age 12 and under. Parents should reserve a free ticket for each participating child through Eventbrite, bit.ly/3Kkn8GK. First Fridays run through December.

In Greencastle, First Fridays begin in May and run through October.

Let's go fly a kite

The Institute will host its 27th annual Kite Fly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 in the fields next to Hooverville Elementary School, 10829 Buchanan Trail East, Waynesboro.

Kite masters, brothers Sam and George Adams, will offer expert kite-flying help to participants. Guests can build their own kites for $1 donation for materials.

The first 10 families will get a copy of the book, "I Wonder Why the Wind Blows."

There will be a free raffle for a fox kite.

Sample beer and wine in Greencastle

The Greencastle-Antrim Craft Beer, Wine and Spirits Festival, sponsored by Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce and M&T Bank, will take place noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, in the parking lot of Antrim Way Honda, 200 S. Antrim Way, Greencastle.

The recently opened Hidden Key Brewing Co. will be there, as well as Michaux Brewing, Rough Edges Brewing Co. and Liquid Art Brewing Co., among others. Vendors will have samples of wines, distilled spirits and ciders.

There will be food from John Allison Public House.

Local band Staff Infection will perform popular songs from the 1960s through today.

The festival is a 21-and-older event. Tickets are $40 and include a commemorative tasting cup. Tickets are on sale through Eventbrite.com.

Designated driver tickets are $10 and will be available at the festival.

Bob Seger tribute

Bob Seger: The Silver Bullet Experience will take guests on a journey with timeless songs from Bob Seger, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, at the Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg.

You've probably heard some of his songs on the radio over the years, such as "Night Moves," "Hollywood Nights," "Like a Rock" and "Turn the Page."

There will be beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks and food available to buy.

Spring carnival

There will be a carnival at the Legion Grounds in Greencastle Wednesday, April 12, through Saturday, April 15. Rides, games and food stands from Snyder's Amusements will be open 6 to 10 p.m. each day.

The event benefits the Greencastle-Antrim Midget Football Association.

Wood carvers from the Keystone State and beyond

Wood carving artists from around the world will demonstrate their skills at the second annual Keystone State Carving and Vendor Event. It will take place Wednesday, April 12, through Saturday, April 15, at the Cumberland Valley Antique Engine and Machinery Association, 1501 Criders Church Road, Chambersburg.

It might turn out as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, event of its kind on the East Coast, organizers say.

There will be lumberjacks, live bands, and a variety of craft and food vendors.

There will be two auctions, at 5:30 p.m. Friday for small carvings and at noon Saturday for master carvings.

The show will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

New 5K run/walk

The Boys and Girls Club of Chambersburg and Shippensburg, Downtown Chambersburg Inc. and Downtown Business Council will host the inaugural Great Futures 5K on Saturday, April 22, to support the betterment of downtown Chambersburg.

Walkers and runners are welcome.

The 5K will start at 10 a.m. at Chambers Fort Park. Most of the course will be on the Chambersburg Rail Trail.

Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids age 12 and under. Those who sign up by 5 p.m. April 6 will be guaranteed a T-shirt.

Let your fandom flag fly

From superheroes to Harry Potter to Disney princesses to Doctor Who to Star Wars to anime and beyond, the Fandom Fest will celebrate fandoms of every kind.

Downtown Business Council, Downtown Chambersburg Inc. and local artist Brittany Shade will host the fandom party from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in downtown Chambersburg.

Guests are encouraged to dress in costume for the cosplay competition. Some of your favorite characters will be at the event.

Vendors will sell fandom-themed goods. There will be activities such as a brick-building game, a sorting ceremony and a scavenger hunt.

More than 30 food and drink vendors will be at the Spring Food Truck Festival, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, in downtown Chambersburg.
