As the Disney Channel kicks off its 40th anniversary celebration, the network is getting serious pushback for excluding Demi Lovato from a compilation video and allegedly hiding comments calling them out for it.

On April 1, the official Disney Channel Twitter account shared a “wand ID compilation” video — a series of clips featuring young Disney stars from all eras making the mouse ears logo on the screen, as was often utilized to bring viewers back into a show airing on the network.

Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Dove Cameron, the Jonas Brothers, Raven-Symoné, Jenna Ortega, Zendaya, and Ashley Tisdale were all among those included in the video, but Lovato was notably absent.

“@DisneyChannel You're welcome. 🤍”

The Sonny with a Chance star wasn’t the only big name to get started on DC and not make an appearance in the tribute — an argument could be made that leaving out Hilary Duff, the Sprouse twins, and Bella Thorne was also a strange choice. Still, Lovato is unarguably one of the biggest stars to come from the Disney Channel, starring in both a TV show and multiple beloved movies for the network, making her exclusion stick out.

It didn’t take long for fans to start theorizing that Disney didn’t want to acknowledge the singer due an accusation they made in their 2021 documentary series, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, that they were raped by another actor on the Disney Channel.

“We were hooking up but I said, ‘hey, this is not going any farther, I’m a virgin and I don’t want to lose it this way,’” Lovato said. “And that didn’t matter to them, they did it anyways. And I internalized it and I told myself it was my fault, because I still went in the room with him, I still hooked up with him.”

She also said that even after she told someone, presumably at Disney, the person in question “never got taken out of the movie they were in.”

“if you think we are overreacting with this whole demi and disney thing then you should probably watch this…”

Although the responses to @DisneyChannel’s original tweet are currently filled with comments about Lovato, fans claim that the account was initially hiding tweets that brought up her accusations.

“Fans call out Disney Channel for leaving Demi Lovato, one of their all-time top talents, out of a montage for their 40th anniversary. The network is also being criticized for hiding comments pointing to Lovato’s allegation that a fellow Disney actor raped her and “never got in…”

Lovato was also left out of a later series of photos that centered around actors who were on the Disney Channel in the same era as they were, although the network finally included them in several group shots after that — something done too late for fans to read as anything other than damage control.
