Jennifer Lopez fans appear to be divided by the star's latest Netflix project. The actor, who last year starred in The Mother, returns with Atlas next month.

The sci-fi film sees Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. But when she joins a mission to capture a renegade robot, she must save the future by putting her faith in AI.

Barbie's Simu Liu, This Is Us and American Fiction star Sterling K Brown and Spin City's Lana Parrilla also star in Atlas. Written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, it's directed by Brad Peyton, who previously helmed San Andreas and Rampage.

Lopez said of the film: “I loved that this is a big sci-fi action movie, but at its core, it’s a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way. I always see everything as a love story, but this is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances, and teach each other how to be more human.”

Netflix dropped a full trailer for the sci-fi adventure on Tuesday (April 23). The almost three-minute trailer introduces us to the highly-advanced technological universe, as well as our main characters as expected. But some reckon the trailer reveals too much of the plot.

In the trailer's comments on YouTube, one person wrote: "She didn’t trust AI and then she does. That means this trailer actually showed a whole character arc in two seconds" as a second joked: "And this is how you show the whole movie and all important plot points in 1 trailer, very good job netflix."

Others weren't impressed with the film's premise. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, @maxkostakis asked: "This is a joke, right? Looks dreadful" as @omojumiller complained: "I am really tired of EVIL AI movies. Come on Hollywood, stretch your imagination to give us a techno-optimistic vision of the future." @_tosinthefirst slammed: "we need better stories!!!"

Others, however, were excited for the film - especially the casting. @BensShirt wrote: "Ok atlas shepherd, I love you already! Cant wait for sci-fi jlo" as @MovieAddictMatt wrote: "I’m a fan of Sci-Fi so I’m definitely giving this a watch. Plus @SimuLiu chewing up the scenery as a baddie?! Yes please!"

@__Marlenaaaaaa vowed: "anything with Jennifer Lopez in I’m watching" as @PurpleMG7 agreed: "This looks like it could be good! I'll be checking it out! And the cast is a definite bonus!"

Atlas lands on Netflix on May 24.
