Maggie Rogers fans have taken to TikTok to address the upsetting concert etiquette they noticed at her recent show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

On Aug. 14, Kendall Lord (@kendall__lord) revealed that she had bought a ticket to Rogers’s Los Angeles date of her “Summer of ’23” tour, which occurred Aug. 13 at the Hollywood Bowl. She’s since called it the “worst concert experience” she’s ever had.

“I just woke up and I was too upset to make this video last night, but last night I went to see Maggie Rogers at the Hollywood Bowl. It was my birthday gift to myself. I spent my own money, bought my own ticket, I went alone,” Lord begins. “I know my problem is literally so minimal compared to everything else going on in the world, but I was still very upset. It was the worst concert experience I’ve ever had.”

Lord says that she feels as though this poor etiquette is specific to Los Angeles.

“So first of all, the band Alvvays opened…I could not hear a single word they were saying because people were talking so loud the entire time. Not a single person clapping…I don’t know what this new culture is going to concerts of people just being disrespectful ’cause maybe you don’t wanna enjoy your time,” she says. “But I spent money and you are ruining the experience for me and other people here who actually came for the concert and not to gossip about posting on Instagram or your job.”

Lord assumed the crowd “would get better” when Rogers came onstage, given that she’s the main act, but there was minimal to zero improvement.

“She literally called the crowd out because no one was standing up. No one was giving her any energy. She kept saying the whole night, like, how weird it was. Like, how grateful she was to play there, but the energy was so terrible,” she recalls. “The people behind me got mad that I stood up because I sat down the first two songs. She played ‘Want Want’ and I wanted to go crazy, but everyone was sitting down.”

Rogers isn’t the first artist to call out their crowd for lacking energy. In May 2023, Lil Wayne walked off the stage during his Los Angeles show just 30 minutes after it started due to the crowd’s low energy.

‘Now I’m not listening to the music. I’m listening to you complain.’

Rogers ended her set with “Different Kind of World” off her 2022 sophomore album, “Surrender,” a decision some concert attendees were upset with, according to Lord.

“And then she closed with, like, the most beautiful song ever. Such a good moment, like, tears in my eyes,” she says. “And the people behind me were like, ‘Why is she bringing the mood down?’ Like, complaining. It’s like, ‘Keep it to yourself because now I’m not listening to the music, I’m listening to you complain.'”

Huff Post also emphasizes the importance of remaining quiet during a show out of respect for the performer.

“During a performance at the theater, opera, ballet, and similar settings, the only sounds should be coming from the stage,” Jodi R.R. Smith, the president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting in Massachusetts told the outlet. “This means no talking while the singers, dancers or actors are performing.”

This poor etiquette went on for the duration of Rogers’s set, which may in part, be due to the fact that the Hollywood Bowl “dilutes audiences” by how they sell their tickets — namely that season ticket holders get priority seating, even though they may not actually be a fan of the artist performing. In fact, there’s an entire Reddit thread dedicated to discussing “Hollywood Bowl Etiquette.”

“It felt like a waste of my time and money, and I was so excited to see this concert,” Lord continues. “I just don’t know what’s up with people being disrespectful to other people and artists nowadays.”

‘Ugh i’m so sorry this happened. it was def a weird one. special in its own way. gorgeous venue. but strange’

Many TikTok users who also attended Rogers’s Aug. 13 show in hopes of having a lively, respectful experience are corroborating Lord’s remarks, while others are sharing their similar encounters with inconsiderate concertgoers at other shows. Rogers herself even commented on Lord’s video.

“I saw Leon Bridges last year at the bowl and it was so sad. No one was singing or even standing. Tons of people left early I felt so bad,” @lilyagulia revealed.

“Truly concert etiquette has gone out the window,” @oli0il wrote. “I always leave a concert so mad about people talking the whole time.”

“Ugh i’m so sorry this happened. it was def a weird one. special in its own way. gorgeous venue. but strange,” Rogers commented from her own TikTok account.

Other Rogers fans who were at the Hollywood Bowl that evening have also taken to TikTok to share footage of “the most awkward audience ever.”

On Aug. 15, TikTok creator Dondréa (@dawnzdrea) also addressed the lack of energy at Rogers’s Hollywood Bowl show. She argues that while people may feel “entitled” to act however they choose at a concert because they paid money to be there, it’s not actually “like that.”

“It’s an exchange. It’s a relationship. The artist performs and the audience gives thanks,” Dondréa says. “When the audience doesn’t participate or do their part, the performer can sense that. They can feel it.”
