Fans spot Bradley Cooper in Buffalo, New York, filming upcoming Guillermo del Toro movie

Something bigger than a snowstorm has arrived in Buffalo, New York: Bradley Cooper.

The Oscar-nominated actor/filmmaker blew into the Queen City Tuesday, according to a story by WGRZ-TV, quoting Guillermo del Toro, who is directing Cooper in the movie "Nightmare Alley," portions of which were to be shot this week in and around Buffalo’s distinctive art deco City Hall building, 65 Niagara Square.

“We start shooting in about a half-hour, they must be somewhere,” del Toro told the NBC affiliate around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Shortly, thereafter, Instagram account @lakeviewtwins shared a photo taken with Cooper outside the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, as first reported by ABC affiliate WKBW-TV.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Wednesday morning for western New York, including the Buffalo area; 5 to 9 inches of snow is expected to fall between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, with significant blowing and drifting. However, right now there isn’t any snow in Niagara Square, something film crews were counting on. So they laid out a white tarp, tweeted WGRZ's Lauren Hall, and trucked in snow to spread around, according to the Buffalo News.

The movie — also co-starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett — is based on the 1947 feature of the same name, about the rise and fall of a con man claiming to be a mind-reader. The News reports that most of the filming is being done in Toronto, but key scenes are being shot in Buffalo “to take advantage of the city’s historic architecture needed for the film’s 1940s setting.”

In 2018, Cooper starred in a remake of "A Star is Born" opposite Lady Gaga. The movie, which Cooper also wrote and directed, was nominated for six Oscars, including best actor for Cooper and best actress for Gaga. The two won a Grammy Award for best pop duo/group performance for the soundtrack single "Shallow."
