Fans Think "Stranger Things" Tried to Troll Donald Trump in Season 3
A lot of the events in Stranger Things may seem like they'd never happen in real life, but some fans have found out that that's not actually true. In fact, some are comparing the city of Hawkins to the government of the United States. Fans think that Stranger Things was intentionally trying to troll Donald Trump through Mayor Larry Kline's storyline. Mayor Kline is the self-interested mayor whose corrupt dealings put Hawkins in a lot of danger. But the actor who plays Mayor Kline, Cary Elwes, said that that's totally not the case. Still, fans were quick to find lots of comparisons between Mayor Kline and the U.S.'s real-life president.
The first thing people noticed is that Mayor Kline's campaign sign was designed in the same way as President Trump's.
So I’m probably not the first to notice but the Mayor Kline sign in Stranger Things season 3 is very similar to the Trump campaign’s 2016 logo pic.twitter.com/Ckjqixtzok

Some people even drew comparisons between Trump's investigation into his alleged ties with Russia and the fact that Mayor Kline is actually involved in shady dealings with Russians in season 3.
So did anyone else notice that Mayor Kline’s sign is kinda super similar to a trump sign? AND they’re both a-holes with sketchy Russian ties? #StrangerThings3 pic.twitter.com/J3hY36yCFA

so is anyone gonna talk about how Mayor Kline in #StrangersThings3 has the same posters as Trump and is a corrupt asshole that’s making the rich richer, destroying small businesses, and corroborating with the Russians?? 🤔🤔🤭😅

Anyone else notice is #StrangersThings3 that mayor Kline's sign is just like Trump's sign and both of them sold themselves to the Russians lmao that's mad funny pic.twitter.com/O85tIX3vMf

Some people even noticed that Mayor Kline's complexion looked slightly orange when he used makeup to cover up the bruises he received from Hopper's beating.
@Cary_Elwes as Mayor Larry Kline- a barely fictionalized version of #Trump, right?🤷🏾♀️
*Just as cocky as he is greedy
*White circles around the eyes
*Works with/for the Russians
Awesome job👊🏾 Hope you're in #PsychTheMovie2 #StrangerThings#strangerthingsseason3 pic.twitter.com/MK77GN5FM5— Phyll Dogg (@phyll_indablank) July 5, 2019
But Cary shut that theory down after telling HuffPost that people were simply drawing connections that don't really exist. "“He just happened to be a politician who is very self-centered,” he told HuffPost. “[It's] not a comment on the president at all.”
Cary originally did think his character was based on Trump, though, until the Duffer Brothers shut down that theory, he told The Wrap.
“They go, ‘No, no, no, it’s not Trump, it’s just somebody that happens to be blonde and full of himself and likes the sound of his own voice,'” Cary said. “Turns out [the Duffer Brothers] wrote that he takes over the Fourth of July celebrations — this is long before the president decided to do that — but this character, in this season, decides to take over the Fourth of July celebrations for himself because he thinks he can run it better than anybody else. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?”
So, there you have it. Stranger Things isn't trying to troll Trump, though fans think the similarities are pretty striking.
