Fareway breaks ground on a new Norwalk store, set to replace a location five blocks away

Boone-based Fareway Meat & Grocery, the grocery store known for its butcher counter, has even more plans to expand in the Des Moines metro area. On Tuesday, company officials break ground on a new location in Norwalk.

The 24,000-square-foot store will be located at 2200 Sunset Drive and will replace Norwalk’s current Fareway store located at 1711 Sunset Drive, said Emily Toribio, the director of corporate outreach and communications for Fareway Stores Inc.

Fareway moves into the Norwalk Central development that includes the new Gregg Young Auto Sports Campus and retail space. The larger store includes additional parking and more items on the shelves as well.

The news comes on the heels of two new Fareway stores opening in the Des Moines metro. In March, a 21,000-square-foot store opened at the southeast corner of 91st Street and Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. Then in May, Fareway opened a 24,000-square-foot store at the northeast corner of 161st Street and Hickman Road in Clive. A Fareway Meat Market opened in Beaverdale last year, the first Meat Market in the Des Moines metro.

The company also plans to break ground for a Granger store in 2024 and open a third Ankeny store in 2025. It also is converting the Brick Street Market and Café in Bondurant into another location, set to open later this year.

Altogether, Fareway plans to open 12 stores in the next two years. Back in January, CEO Reynolds Cramer told the Des Moines Register that the company also plans to expand in the Kansas City metro market and may look at new locations in Wisconsin.
