Fargo boss Noah Hawley has addressed the anthology show's future following the finale of season five.

The black comedy crime drama recently wrapped up its fifth outing – which has previously been slated as the last series – with a suitably chaotic and bloody end.

But, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator and executive producer Noah Hawley has explained exactly where he's at with a possible future for Fargo.

"I entered the fifth season thinking it would be the last one," he said. "Even telling FX that it was going to be the last one."

But continuing, Hawley explained why there may be hope yet for Fargo fans, adding, "But I got it up on its feet and thought: 'Who am I kidding?'

"This is such a rewarding arena to be constantly reinventing under the auspices of that word, Fargo, to do just about anything as long as it has a couple of elements in it. There are no restrictions, other than there has to be crime, and there has to be decency. "

He finished with a classic teaser: "Other than that, the sky’s the limit. I don’t have an idea at this moment, but, they seem to come."

The series has featured a whole host of A-Listers across its five seasons, including Martin Freeman, Kirsten Dunst, Carrie Coon, Ben Wishaw and Jon Hamm.

Hawley is next set to helm the FX series adaptation of classic sci-fi horro flick Alien, and assured the publication he has, "as many eyes as [he] can put on [Alien] right now."

The series currently stars Don't Worry Darling actor Sydney Chandler and The Mandalorian's Timothy Olyphant.

Fargo airs on FX in the US, Channel 4 in the UK, and streams on Netflix.

The Alien TV series will air on FX.
