Sep. 3—Pesticide Container Collection: Empty pesticide container collection will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Renville County Landfill located at 32877 County Road 4, Olivia. To be eligible for collection, pesticide containers must be rigid, high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE), have been triple rinsed and pesticide free, and have all caps, foil seals and labels removed. Containers from small up to 55-gallon drums. Jugs can be tied together with twine or bagged. Certain products discolor plastic and will be accepted provided no material can be smeared with a plastic glove. Renville County will accept only 250 jugs or fewer without an appointment. If you plan to dispose of more than 250 jugs, call Seth Sparks, Drainage Systems manager, at 320-523-3759 to schedule an appointment. Chemical containers can, and should, be returned to retailers for recycling. Contact your retailer for more details.

New Master Gardener training: Oct. 1 is the application deadline to become a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteer. Extension Master Gardeners bring science-based horticulture knowledge and practices to Minnesota, promoting healthy landscapes and building communities through volunteer efforts. Master Gardeners are reliable sources of gardening information for Minnesotans. Becoming a Master Gardener gives volunteers a chance to expand their interests in areas including sustainability, local foods, pollinators and climate change. Master Gardeners also put their skills to work conserving green spaces, native plants and clean water. The training will be all online and spread out over 14 weeks. To become a Master Gardener, individuals commit to complete online training and 50 hours of volunteering in the first year. After the first year, they commit 25 hours to annual volunteer work; many choose to devote more time to the program. Master Gardeners come from all ages and backgrounds. Horticulture Display Garden: Open daily from dawn to dusk, University of Minnesota's West Central Research and Outreach Center, 46352 State Hwy. 329, Morris. Please adhere to all safety procedures and protocols posted at garden entrances and informational kiosks.
Prairie Pothole Day: Sept. 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Stoney Ridge Farm, south of the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and state Highway 9. Outdoor celebration includes dog trials, black powder shoot, archery competition, slough scoot, walk in the woods, kids' activities, food, raffle, duck calling contest, goose calling contest and more.

Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center: Trails at the rural Spicer center may be used during daylight hours at no cost. A bathroom with composting toilets is open by the pavilion. Pets should be on a leash. All equipment rentals (fat-tire bikes, kayaks, canoes) will be handled on a reservation basis, made at least 24 hours in advance.
