Farmers Continue Delhi Sit-In as Nationwide Strike Held

Indian farmers called for a nationwide strike on December 8 in protest of controversial new farming laws, local media reported.

The four-hour strike would impact public transport, rail travel, markets, and restaurants, according to Business Today.

The reforms would allow farmers to sell products to private businesses directly, rather than to the government at assured wholesale prices, the BBC reported.

Gurnam Singh Charuni, one of the movement’s leaders, told the BBC, “We don’t trust big business. Free markets work in countries with less corruption and more regulation. It can’t work for us here.”

Thousands of protesters gathered at Delhi’s Singhu border to support farmers who have been camped there in protest for over a week, Media India Group reported.
