Annual Senior Picnic

2023 SummerQuest

The Mary S. Biesecker Public Library 2023 SummerQuest summer learning program. Annual outdoor story times 10 a.m., at the Union Street Playground. The stories are designed for toddlers, preschoolers and students grades K-2 and will be held July 11 and 18. Baby Rhyme Time for children under 2 years old. In case of inclement weather, relocate to the library. The Penn State Master Gardeners of Somerset County Budding Gardeners program gardening workshops for children from grades K-5, June 29 at 10 a.m. at the library. This year, the gardeners will host classes on butterflies, creating a butterfly habitat, container gardening and bees. Space is limited, so sign up as soon as possible. As a participant in the Summer Youth cafe program, free lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays through July 18, along with at the Budding Gardeners events on Thursdays in June, at the Union Street Playground. Lunches are provided by the Summer Food Service Program of the Pittsburgh Food Bank. Sign up in advance so that an appropriate amount of lunches can be prepared. Older children and teens are invited to take part in the Summer Learning program through July 25. Grades 3-5 can register at the library and pick up a reading bingo card. Levitt AMP Cumberland Music Series

The Allegany Arts Council lineup for the 2023 Levitt AMP Cumberland Music Series on the Festival Grounds at Canal Place, Cumberland, Maryland, at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday, through Aug. 3. Wings-n-Waves

Wings-n-Waves at the Windber Recreation Park, sponsored by the Windber Municipal Authority. Three local restaurants and bars compete head to head each week 6-10 p.m. Thursdays to crown the 2023 Wings-n-Waves Champions. A night swim in the lighted pool. Stuff the bus

For the second year, the United Way of the Laurel Highlands is working with CamTran and Giant Eagle in an effort to support the United Way's growing Diaper Bank with Stuff the Bus. From noon to 6 p.m. June 30, a CamTran bus will be parked at the Giant Eagle in Richland Township, where community members can help to stuff it with diapers. Stuff the Bus is a diaper drive to keep the inventory stocked. Stop by with a package of diapers or wipes. Monetary donations will be used to buy diapers in the size of greatest need.

Firecracker 300

The New Centerville and Rural Volunteer Fire Co. inaugural Firecracker 300 Summer Shootout and truck and tractor pull is 7 p.m. June 30 and July 1, at the new Heritage Track, 3054 Kingwood Road, Rockwood. The Interstate Truck & Tractor Pullers and Full Pull Productions will be bringing more than 50 vehicles from more than six states compete. All proceeds benefit the fire company. Food available onsite. Gates open at 3 p.m. both nights.

Golf outing

The annual golf outing to benefit Tunnel to Towers, for the vets and first responders, 10 a.m. July 1, at Northwinds and Northwinds Peninsula, Arnold Palmer's first designed course. Fireworks

The 4th of July Fireworks and Celebration is 9:30 p.m. July 3, at the Somerset football field. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the festivities will kick off at the football field, Franklin Avenue in Somerset, with Skinny's BBQ, Blanca Martin Shaved Ice, Domino's Pizza, and Mountain Kettle Corn. Historic Hanna's Town

Celebrate America's birthday at Historic Hanna’s Town, a Revolutionary War settlement. Discover how western Pennsylvania participated in important events before, during, and after the war that created the United States. This event is free to celebrate Independence Day. Avenue in concert

CACCC exhibition

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 2023 June and July exhibition, Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!, an exhibition featuring a mixture of paintings by artist Nalini Bhat. Shakti, the Power of the Feminine! will be hosted in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery and showcase a wide variety of Nalini’s artistic works. Exhibit will be on display through July 28. CACCC Cultural India Art Luncheon

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County presents "India Wonders: A Cultural Art Luncheon"from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8. This event will be filled with art, entertainment, and food from India Garden. This special cultural luncheon will begin with a gallery talk about the displayed works of Nalini Bhat’s "Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!" exhibition; along with traditional Chai Tea, served hot or cold as authentic cultural music from the Terra Pan will be played by Mark Ed. An authentic Indian lunch from India Garden will include chicken tikka masala (boneless chicken cooked and curried in Indian spices), palak paneer (spinach and homemade Indian cubed cheese cooked with aromatic Indian spices), rice, naan bread (bread cooked in clay oven), and jalebies (funnel like shape made out of flour and rice flour) for dessert. In addition, the entertainment of belly dancing and sword dance will take place during lunch.

Antiques & Collectibles

The Hanna’s Town Antiques & Collectors Market is held the second Sunday of each month through October. The gate opens at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and the market continues through early afternoon, although some vendors are set up by 1 p.m. Saturday and sell that afternoon. There is parking on site. Future dates for 2023 are July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, and Oct. 8. Proceeds benefit the Westmoreland Historical Society’s education and preservation projects at Historic Hanna’s Town, a Revolutionary War period settlement and site of the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains. Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to assist the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Bureau of Habitat Management Lake Division in final construction and placing of 198 fish habitat structures in Somerset Lake on July 10, July 11 and July 12. The activity will take place at the lake's main boat launch along Wood Duck Road during the day. Evenings will be used if needed. All equipment will be provided. Poorbaugh/Burbach reunion

A reunion of related descendants of Philip Burbach/Poorbaugh, (Ca 1750-1812), will be held July 9, at the Mt. Olivet Church grove in Northampton Township, 9 miles South of Berlin, off LR2020. This is a continuation of Poorbaugh/Purbaugh/ Burbach reunions which held it’s 67th reunion in 2022. The first reunion of the association was in 1952. Log Art Theatre Academy- FAME Jr.

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County’s (CACCC) is producing Log Art Theatre Academy musical theatre camp of FAME Jr. production will take place during the week of July 17-22. Log Art Theatre Academy’s Musical Theatre Camp registration ends at 5 p.m. July 10. Pre-auditions before the camp will be from 5:30–8:30 p.m. July 14 or from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m. July 15. Registered musical theatre campers will be assigned an audition date. The eligible ages of children and youth to participate in this camp include ages 8 through 18 years. The FAME Jr. production will include a free Log Art Theatre Academy Performance Workshop with Angela R. Benefit concert

Patriot Park Foundation is having a benefit concert on July 14. The instrumental group Touch of Brass will be the featured performer. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Bring along your lawn chair. A free will offering will be taken.

'A Midsummer Night's Ball'

As part of the July Living History Weekend, Compass Inn Museum's “A Midsummer Night’s Ball” is from 6:30-10 p.m. July 15. Guests will be greeted by the sounds of 19th-century music before being ushered under the grand tent and onto the dance floor. Should guests find themselves thirsty or hungry, they can find their way to the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres for a refreshment. “A Midsummer Night’s Ball” will feature local dancing master, Brett Walker, with accompanying period music by The Wayward Companions. The Wayward Companions is a historical music ensemble with members from diverse backgrounds. They perform the music of the 18th & 19th centuries with a versatility that can take one back to the ballrooms, parlors, taverns, military encampments, and everyday life in which music played an integral part of both genteel and popular society. Period clothing of any style is encouraged. Event tickets are available for purchase on the website at compassinn.org/eventcalendar. Refreshments are included in the ticket price. Confluence Creative Arts Center

Confluence Creative Arts Center has activities planned for the summer months. Three Chords and Be There! Jam and Folk Sing, 6:30-8:30 p.m. third Thursdays, July 20, Aug. 17. Bring your voice, your ukulele, your guitar (all acoustic instruments welcome), and your enthusiasm for a foot-tapping evening of singing and playing. Each Jam and Folk Sing will have a theme. Summer development series

The Learning Lamp and Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, PennAEYC, launched a free summer professional development series. The monthly workshops take place through August via Zoom. The sessions meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. School-age professionals including child care staff, teachers, program directors and summer camp staff are encouraged to attend. Ligonier Night Market

The monthly Ligonier Night Market is around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. Food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. Night Market added last year to sell their hand-made goods and products ― ranging from unique woodcrafts to original artwork and more. The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through September (July 20, Aug. 17, and Sept. 21). Musical entertainment schedule: artists will perform on the Diamond Park bandstand: July 20: Acoustical Bruce; Aug. 17: Detention; Sept. 21: Cashout. Books Come Alive ― a unique library-based outreach program that takes best loved children's books and turns them into 30-minute musicals designed to reach students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Performances to the Night Market Aug. 17 (The Velveteen Rabbit). The shows will start at 6 p.m. and will be held on the library’s outside patio. Mt. Davis Challenge Bicycle Race

The 10th annual Mt. Davis Challenge Bicycle Race, hosted by the Confluence Tourism Association, is July 23. The 40/56 mile race starts in Confluence and climbs over Mt. Davis. Race starts at 11 a.m. Course is lollipop style using Route 523, Fort Hill Road, Pumpkin Center Road over Mt. Davis, loops back around on St. Paul Road, Oak Dale Road, Route 669 and Savage Road. All riders required to have USA Cycling license. A one day license will be available race day for the non-licensed. Race registration www.bikereg.com/mt-davis-challenge. Registration that day at the community center next to town park in Confluence, starts at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds are donated to organizations that help with the race and used to fund Confluence Tourism Association projects and events.

Monday Movies on the Amphitheatre

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County (CACCC) will begin its first summer of Monday Movies on the Amphitheatre (MMA.Through First Commonwealth Bank’s support, these movies will be offered free of charge. Additionally, popcorn, snacks and refreshments will be available for an affordable price. All movies begin at 8:30 p.m. July 24 Jurassic World Dominion (2022). The third installment in the Jurassic World franchise centers on a new world shared by humans and dinosaurs. July 31 Encanto (2021). Deep in the Colombian mountains, the Madrigal family possesses an extraordinary secret. Each member of the family is able to perform magic. Aug. 7 Labyrinth (1986). A teen must rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King by solving his labyrinth. Aug. 14 Aladdin-animated (1992). Energetic musical based on the "Arabian Nights" tale. It's the story of a street urchin who discovers a magic lamp. Chairs provided or bring your own. All movies will be outdoors on CACCC’s amphitheatre, 1217 Menoher Boulevard, Johnstown. In case of inclement weather, movies will be moved indoors to the M. Josephine Paul Family Museum.

She Loves Me

A musical presented by Log Art Theatre Academy at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Boulevard, Johnstown, 7 p.m. July 27-29, and 2 p.m. July 30. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, we meet shop clerks, Amalia and Georg, who don't see eye to eye. They now live for the love letters that they exchange, but the identity of their admirers remains unknown. Tickets available now at caccc.org.
