Northern Michigan farmers markets return with fresh produce, goods

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — A sure sign of warmer weather is the arrival of farmers markets.

While many farms and businesses operate farmers markets year round, some of the more seasonal markets will be getting underway this month across Northern Michigan.

If you’re looking for some fresh produce, flowers or locally crafted goods, check out some of these farmers markets this spring and summer:

Downtown Petoskey Farmers Market

The Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market will kick off its season on Friday, May 26. The downtown market, located on Howard Street, will be in operation every Friday from  8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May 26 to Sept. 29.

The market participates in the SNAP, Double Up Food Bucks, WIC Project FRESH, and Senior Project FRESH food assistance programs.

The Petoskey market will also feature four kids’ days this year on June 23, July 21, Aug. 11 and Sept. 8 where there will be special activities for kids of all ages.

Old Town Emmet Farm Market

Just across town in Petoskey, the Old Town Emmet Farm Market will start its season on Saturday, May 27.

Operating out of the Friendship Center parking lot at 1322 Anderson Road, the market features a group of local farmers, growers, bakers, makers, crafters and artisans. The market is open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May 27 until Oct. 7.

Harbor Springs Farmers Market

The Harbor Springs Farmers Market opens for the season on Saturday, May 27.

Open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the market is in operation on Saturdays from May 27 to Oct. 14 and Wednesday from May 31 to Aug. 30 on Main Street in downtown Harbor Springs.

Along with vendors, the market features a Young Entrepreneur program that provides real-world selling opportunities to kids under 18 who can sell their own wares at the market. There is also a Market Sprouts tent where kids can learn about food and farms with a full slate of live music.

Charlevoix Farmers Market

The Charlevoix Farmers Market in downtown Charlevoix opens soon, kicking off its season at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 18.

Operating on State Street, the market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays until Oct. 26.

The Pavilion Market 

Downtown Gaylord’s Pavilion Market begins on Saturday, May 27.

The market is in operation on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the pavilion on South Court Avenue.

Boyne City Farmers Market

The Boyne City Farmers Market is open a year-round, but its summer season starts on Saturday, May 20 to coincide with the National Morel Mushroom Festival.

The market will be open on from 8 a.m. until noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Veterans Park until mid-October. The July 8 and Aug. 12 markets will take place at Peninsula Beach.

East Jordan Farmers Market 

A long-running tradition, the East Jordan Farmers Market kicks off on Thursday, May 18.

The market is in operation from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursdays at the East Jordan Sportsman’s Park.

Cheboygan Farmers Market

While the Cheboygan Farmers Market is open year-round, the summer season kicks off Memorial Day weekend and runs through the end of October.

Along with fresh produce, baked goods and syrups, the markets also features art and craft vendors.

The market is in operation from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Festival Square Pavilion.

Sault Ste. Marie Farmers Market

The Sault Ste. Marie Farmers Market operates an indoor location at the Bayliss Public Library over the winter, but in the summer you can find the market at Portage and Ashmun streets in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

The market was set to open for the season on May 10, and will be in operation every Wednesday from 4-6:30 p.m. until Oct. 25.

Pickford Farmers Market

The Pickford Farmers Market will open for the season on Tuesday, May 23.

Open from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesdays, the market can be found on Manila Street in Pickford.
