Fast-acting firefighters save farm animals from fire in West Newbury

Firefighters in West Newbury were able to rescue animals from a fire that was threatening to engulf a barn Sunday night.

Fire crews arrived at 74 Maple Street at approximately 8:30 p.m. to find a barn housing goats enflamed.

The firefighters immediately deployed a fire hose and extinguished the fire quickly.

None of the goats or the alpacas also housed on the property were harmed.

The barn sustained minor water damaged and a charred side panel will have to be replaced.

“The fast response of firefighters and their aggressive work made the difference tonight,” said West Newbury Fire Chief Michael Dwyer.

An initial investigation revealed that the fire started in a compost bin next to the barn.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
