Police pursuit leads to wrong-way crash, 1 dead on 580

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — A person died after three vehicles collided on Interstate 580 in Oakland early Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The El Cerrito Police Department was alerted to a commercial burglary at Tobacco Outlet at 4:22 a.m., where a white pickup truck rammed the front of the business. En route, officers located the pickup truck. Police said the officers attempted to stop the suspects and the driver began to evade officers.

The ECPD officer chased the suspects onto westbound I-80 and followed them toward the Bay Bridge toll plaza. According to police, the suspects were traveling on westbound I-80 where it merges with westbound I-580. The driver then abruptly changed direction on the freeway, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-580, police said.

The truck crashed into a white utility van and a gray BMW car, CHP said. The crash was reported around 4:30 a.m.

The suspects in the truck sustained major injuries, according to CHP. The occupant of the white utility van involved in the crash also suffered major injuries, CHP said. The occupant of the third vehicle, a gray BMW, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

All lanes of I-580 and I-80 in Oakland were reopened at 8 a.m. following a three-hour-long closure.
