Fatal crash: 7 vehicles involved, Owens Street S. reopened after 4 hours

Owens Street from Commercial Street to Saginaw Street reopened following a seven-vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality Monday morning.

Salem police were called to the crash around 7:20 a.m., according to Salem Police spokesperson Lt. Debbie Aguilar.

Jose Rogelio Lopez Jr, 54, of Salem, died in the crash. One occupant of another vehicle was transported to Salem Hospital by medics to be treated for their injuries, Aguilar said in a prepared statement.

Officers' initial investigation found a Ford F-150 truck was traveling east on Owens Street S, approaching a red light at Commercial Street SE, she said.

"The Ford truck failed to stop and struck the rear end of a Lexis sedan" that Lopez was in while waiting with other traffic at the red light, Aguilar said.

The additional vehicles involved include a Honda SUV, Volkswagen Jetta, Volvo sedan, Nissan SUV, and a Dodge Ram truck.

The investigation is ongoing, but it is suspected speed and a medical issue may have contributed to the crash, Aguilar said.

Police had not issued any citations or made any arrests as of Monday evening.
