A fatal crash shut down a busy section of U.S. 192 for hours Wednesday afternoon in West Melbourne, and police are investigating the details of the collision.

The crash was reported just after 11:40 a.m. in front of Sam's Club at 4255 W. New Haven Ave.

“We're still out there mapping the area, doing a thorough investigation due to the severity of the crash," West Melbourne Police Lt. Graig Erenstoft said about 2:30 p.m.

Erenstoft said it appears a westbound red four-door vehicle was turning left into Sam's Club when it drove into the path of an eastbound white utility truck.

One of the occupants was pronounced dead at the hospital, Erenstoft said. He did not have information available on their identities.

"It's unfortunate. It's a tragic incident, especially for that family this time of year," Erenstoft said.

The fatal crash investigation remains ongoing.
