Fatal crash southeast of Lubbock kills 1, injuries 3

One Slaton woman died and three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash outside of Lubbock on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

About 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, a 2023 Chevrolet Aveo, followed by a 2023 Ford Expedition EL, traveled east on FM 41, approaching County Road 2830. The Chevrolet was driving slower than the posted speed limit of 75 mph, and the Ford "closed the distance," according to the release.

The Ford attempted to steer to the left, but could not control their speed and collided into the rear of the Chevrolet.

The weather condition had high winds, and the road condition was dry, according to the release.

The driver and two passengers in the Chevrolet had "moderate injuries" and were taken to University Medical Center. A third passenger, Margarita Martinez-Rodriguez, 61, from Slaton, died at the scene. She had not worn a seatbelt.

The driver of the Ford had no injuries.
