Fatal officer-involved shooting in York County leaves one dead

SPRING GARDEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – Pennsylvania State Police and the York County District Attorney’s office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a York County man dead late Friday night.

Pennsylvania State Police say they responded to the 600 block of Colonial Ave. to assist Spring Garden Township Police with a domestic incident involving multiple firearms.

Troopers say Payden Sells, 34 exited the home and began shooting in the direction of police. Officers returned fire and struck the man who was later pronounced deceased by the York County Coroner’s office.

No officers were struck by gunfire, however, one officer did sustain minor injuries during the incident.

Officers from York City, Springettsbury Township, West York Borough, and the York County Regional Police Department also responded to assist.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J Major Case Team, consisting of members from
Chester and Lancaster Counties, also responded to the scene to investigate with the assistance of Detectives from the York County District Attorney’s Office.

All officers and Troopers who discharged their weapons will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The coroner states that an autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 16.
