Man killed in rollover crash on SR-78

SAN DIEGO — A SigAlert was issued for State Route 78 Thursday evening after a car rolled over an embankment near Ramona, leaving at least one person dead.

The crash was reported to law enforcement just after 6:30 p.m. According to California Highway Patrol logs, a silver Dodge Challenger flipped and rolled down about 200 feet into an embankment near 19000 San Pasqual Valley Road.

The San Diego Police Department said the driver of the Dodge was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crossed into the eastbound lane to pass multiple vehicles. The driver was reported to have lost control of his vehicle, veering off the roadway to the left.

The vehicle struck a boulder, which authorities say caused the Dodge to flip, cross both lanes of
traffic, and go down an embankment on the north side of the roadway.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene while still inside his vehicle. SDPD’s Traffic Division is investigating the crash.

Road closures were temporarily in place between San Pasqual Academy and Ramona for several hours, CHP said. The area has since reopened.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
