Fatal shooting investigated in Fort Pierce; Port St. Lucie man dead

FORT PIERCE — A 31-year-old Port St. Lucie man died this week after a shooting incident, and police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two “persons of interest,” a Fort Pierce Police lieutenant said Thursday.

Police about 11:26 p.m. Tuesday were called regarding a disturbance in the 1200 block of North 27th Street, which is an apartment complex, police Lt. James Gagliano said Thursday.

Investigators reported finding the 31-year-old man slumped over in the front of a Nissan sport utility vehicle. He’d been shot and was pronounced dead by St. Lucie County Fire District officials, Gagliano said.

Police are looking for what Gagliano described as two “persons of interest.”

One is a Black male wearing black shorts, a white T-shirt and white sandals or slide-type shoes. He appears to have facial hair and a low haircut.

The second is a Black male in a black T-shirt, black shorts and possibly black sandals or slides.

“They were actually observed leaving the scene,” Gagliano said, noting they were on foot heading south through the complex.

Gagliano said police got video surveillance footage, which they are reviewing.

“Detectives are out there right now conducting a neighborhood canvass and collecting additional video surveillance,” he said.

The motive in the incident remains under investigation.

Police did not release the name of the deceased, citing Marsy’s law.

Introduced in memory of a young woman murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Marsy’s Law was created to offer crime victims a slate of rights, including protecting them and their families from harassment by their attackers.

Some law enforcement officials have interpreted the statute as applying to any victim, as well as to law enforcement officers being entitled to privacy and having their identity protected.
