Man found fatally shot Tuesday in home near East 36th, Olive streets in Kansas City

A man was found shot and killed Tuesday afternoon inside a Kansas City home, police said.

The shooting was reported about 2:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Olive Street in the city’s Ivanhoe Northeast neighborhood, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Responding officers were directed by people outside on the block to a nearby home where they found the man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. He died at the scene.

Investigators were still working to determine the victim’s ID and whether he lived in the home or was visiting. They were also consulting with possible witnesses who may have heard or seen something, Becchina said.

“Quite a few people are out and about on this block and the surrounding blocks. So we’re optimistic that somebody may have seen or heard something or have a little bit of information that detectives can go on to kind of give them a break in this and lead them to who’s responsible,” he said.

Around the time of the fatal shooting, two other possible gunshot victims arrived at an area hospital. Becchina said the department is not sure at this point whether the shootings were related but detectives will interview those victims to see if that’s the case.

The homicide marked the 70th this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star. There had been 87 killings by this time last year, which was the deadliest in the city’s history with 182 homicides.

The department is encouraging anyone with information to contact its homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. A reward of up to $25,000 for is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Gun violence is the subject of a statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
