A Meriden father accidentally shot his 17-year-old son on Friday afternoon while allegedly teaching the boy about firearms, police said.

The teen was shot once near his shoulder with a 9mm handgun around 3:05 p.m. on Friday on Forest Avenue, according to the Meriden Police Department.

The boy’s father allegedly accidentally shot him while he “had been showing him the weapon,” police said.

“The father was planning on getting his son acclimated with firearms in order to begin firearms training at a local gun range in the near future,” the police department said in a statement.

The boy was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and then transferred to a trauma center by Life Star, police said. On Saturday, police said the teen remained hospitalized and was in stable condition.

No one else was injured in the shooting, police said.

Police on Saturday said the investigation was ongoing and they could not comment on the father’s identity or if he would be charged.
