Father arrested in Brimfield Township crash that killed son, injured 2 other children

A man facing charges in a single-vehicle crash that killed his son and injured two other children last year in Brimfield Township has been taken into custody six months after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Donald F. Robinson Jr., 37, was arraigned in Portage County Court of Common Pleas on Friday morning. His bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety, with the condition that he not drive.

An attorney for Robinson could not immediately be identified.

A warrant was issued for Robinson's arrest in June, immediately after a grand jury indicted him. He was booked into Portage County Jail on Wednesday after he was taken into custody by the Portage County Sheriff's Office, according to a jail booking report. Court records show a Kent address for Robinson, but the booking report lists an Akron address.

According to an Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report, Robinson was driving an SUV southbound on Sunnybrook Road at 7:44 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2022, when the SUV twice went off the right side of the road before it struck an embankment and fire hydrant and overturned several times, ejecting Robinson and his three children. None were wearing seta belts, the highway patrol said.

The report estimated the vehicle was traveling at 90 mph just before the crash, twice the posted speed limit.

Robinson was taken by ambulance to Summa Akron City Hospital and his children were taken to Akron Children's Hospital.

Donald F. Robinson III, 11, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The report said his brother, 8, suffered a head injury in the crash. His sister, 13, suffered a chin laceration that required stitches.

Their father suffered pelvis and hip injuries.

Robinson is facing charges in the indictment of aggravated vehicular homicide and three counts of endangering children, all third-degree felonies, two counts of fourth-degree felony vehicular assault and a single count of minor misdemeanor reckless operation.

A jury trial is scheduled a Feb. 21.
