Father charged with felony murder, child abuse upon death of 5-week-old son

A 20-year-old is facing child abuse charges and now first-degree felony murder after his 5-week-old son died.

Joshua R. Lane was arrested after his son, Deacon Lane, was brought to Centennial Medical Center Sunday, Metro Nashville police said. Staff at the hospital were able to get the infant stabilized and transferred him to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

The baby suffered bruising, a fractured rib that was healing and severe head trauma. He had very little brain function, police said.

Lane allegedly told police that "he zoned out and may have shaken the child," and said that bruising on the baby's knee was caused by pinching. He was initially charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse.

The infant died Tuesday afternoon. Police charged his father with first-degree felony murder upon his death.
