Father drowns after boat overturns in Lexington, Indiana, pond

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a Sunday morning drowning incident near Lexington, Indiana.

According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, dispatchers received a report of a potential drowning in the 4200 block of South Pleasant Ridge Road near Lexington around 1:44 a.m. Sunday.

Mark D. Lyon, 37, of Scottsburg, Indiana, and his son had been fishing with a small boat in a private pond when the boat overturned, throwing both into the water. Lyon was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident, according to a press release from DNR.

DNR Law Enforcement public safety officers recovered Lyon’s body from the pond around 7:13 a.m. using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and side scan sonar.

Officials urge everyone to wear a lifejacket when around water, especially if swimming ability and environmental and water conditions are questionable.

This is an ongoing investigation and information is subject to change.
