This Father's Day, pick up a brush: Daddies Do Hair, Too event aims to break stereotypes

Anything moms can do, dads can do too. That's what Mercy Health believes, and is sponsoring a father-daughter event to help teach dads the art of hairstyling.

Just in time for Father's Day this Friday, Mercy Health is partnering with the Unspoken Words Alliance to sponsor Daddies Do Hair, Too at the Woodlawn Community Center from 5-8 p.m.

The Daddies Do Hair, Too event was inspired by Krys Styles from the Kassie Project and the trend of fathers posting online how-to videos of how they style their daughters' hair.

The trend resonated with Kimberley Stephens a perinatal outreach program manager at Mercy Health, whose son styles his daughter's hair.

“When dads learn how to take care of their daughters’ hair, it allows moms to take a break and lower their stress levels. Learning how to take care of their own hair also helps African American girls build and grow their self-esteem,” Stephens said in a release.

During the event, dads will learn how to style their daughters' natural hair and support its health and beauty with the help of professional stylists.

Dads will also have the opportunity to learn about the discrimination and harassment faced by those with natural hair.
