Father's Day weekend features an ABBA tribute, Juneteenth celebration and more in Rockford
Father's Day weekend offers a variety of fun events in the Rockford area.
Here's a list of more than 20 things going on this weekend.
Music in the Park
What: Rosie & the Rivets are not your typical "oldies" band. Although their sound and look are deeply rooted in the 1950s, they aren't stuck in one era. You'll hear rock and roll, girl group, soul, surf, and British Invasion favorites along with current music with a retro twist. It's a high-energy stage show that's fresh and fun for all ages. Audiences have a hard time staying in their seats. Concessions available (including sandwiches, beer and wine).

Old Settlers Days
What: Old Settlers Days is the largest music festival in the Rockford area. The Main Stage features some of the best up and coming and top hit makers. Other highlights are a carnival, kids' activities, beer tent and food vendors.

Duke Otherwise Show
What: Duke Otherwise, from Madison, Wis., is a playful wordsmith, spirited performer, skilled guitarist and captivating tap dancer. Using his distinct Baritone, he sings imaginative songs that all ages will delight in. Duke’s performances are filled with audience participation, dancing, an array of musical styles and fun. For ages 3 to 11. Registration is required. Parents and caregivers are welcome to accompany their children.

Pride Month Movies: A Road to Home (2015)
What: A Road to Home follows six LGBTQ youth through New York City as they learn to survive in the streets, then struggle to find beds, jobs and some sense of purpose and direction for their lives. Four have grown up in poverty, two not. Five are people of color, one not. All have been rejected.

What: There will be more than 60 local vendors with fresh produce, baked goods, handmade items, jewelry, cheese, honey and more underneath the pavilion. There will be food trucks, local breweries and rotating kid's activities. Live music this week will be from Longshot and Redwood.

Trinadora's Third Friday Musical Potpourri
What: Janel Nelson and Ron Holm comprise the Trinadora Duo. They perform a musical mixture (vintage and contemporary pop, folk, country, jazz, blues, Latin, Celtic, and variety music). Janel and Ron accompany their vocals with keyboard, ocarina, guitar, ukulele, fiddle, harmonica, jSax, bass, steel guitar, concertina, and more instruments.

Disney's Moana Jr.

One-Year Anniversary Party

Concerts on the Creek Presents: Gaines and Wagoner—Stringed Instrument Wizards
What: Husband and wife duo of Mary Gaines (cello, guitar, bass, vocals) and Chris Wagoner (violin, mandolins, lapsteel, ukulele, guitar, accordion, vocals) will play an eclectic mix of Americana original and classic tunes ranging from folk to jazz, bluegrass to blues, honky-tonk and a little singer-songwriter on the side. Pizza by the slice on sale by 6:15 p.m. If any is left, it will also be sold during intermission. Bottled beverages and light refreshments will also be available.

Dorothy Paige-Turner Concert
What: In observance of Juneteenth, Paige-Turner will explore through music, stories and poetry how secret and coded messages are embedded within spirituals and folk songs, created to communicate various means of escape to the enslaved via the Underground Railroad.

Freeze Time
What: Learn the story of a car put into a cement time capsule and how she ended up in Roscoe. Check out this unique story as you collect relics of the past and today. Remember some of the items you might see on display and capture that moment. Take a picture in Elvis's suit, be a detective during a dark time, take a picture with Batman next to the Batmobile and add it all to your time capsule.

Midsommar Festival 2023
What: Midsommar will soon be here, and it is one of the most popular celebrations for Swedes, both in Sweden and in America. This is the season when music fills the air and a time when relatives and friends gather in the open meadow around flower-bedecked tables of food.

South Main Mercado
What: The South Main Mercado is a new outdoor market, serving south Rockford and the Rockford community. It started as an idea to showcase the Hispanic/Latino Community and has grown into a larger community event. The Mercado will take up the entire Heritage Museum Park as well as the adjoining parking lot. It will be filled with a variety of local retail vendors (jewelry, clothing, art, more), food trucks, and a variety of community partners, especially those with office bilingual support and service. Live entertainment includes local musicians such as Tito Cevallos, Mosaico Cultural de Rockford and Estilo 815.

31st annual 2023 Juneteenth Celebration
What: Enjoy community church service from Pastor Alexander and Pastor Copeland in the morning, an all-black graduation in the afternoon and performance by DJ Dex and a Live at Levings Talent Show. Continue the celebration Monday with a talent show from RPS District 205, music from the John Stanford Band, ILLROCK Drum and Bugle Corp and several more talented artists. The Traditional Juneteenth Awards will be at 4 p.m. with the Juneteenth Community Awards at 5:45 p.m.
