These FAU football players landed with teams after the 2022 NFL Draft

For the second year in a row, no FAU players were selected this year in the NFL Draft.

However, multiple Owls have been signed as undrafted free agents Saturday.

Time will tell if other draft-eligible FAU players will be signed as LB Akileis Leory, RB James Charles, and wide receivers Damian Alloway, TJ Chase, Brandon Robinson, and Willie Wright still await a deal with an NFL team.

Here's a look at which FAU players signed as undrafted free agents:

Zyon Gilbert

With easily the most game-time experience on the team having played in 60 games, defensive back Zyon Gilbert was a lock to be on an NFL roster with his production and performance at FAU’s NFL Pro Day.

It happened as Gilbert signed with the New York Giants, per sources. This was later confirmed by the football program.

He recorded a 40-inch vertical leap, had an 11-foot-6-inch broad jump and ran a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash, even with some wind during Pro Day. Gilbert stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 182 pounds which is well in the realm of a prototypical NFL defensive back and with his illustrious career at FAU, he’ll be in competition for a spot on the roster among players in the position group.

Caliph Brice

Considered to be one of the standouts from FAU’s defense last year and with an impressive pro day, linebacker Caliph Brice signed with the Green Bay Packers.

It was very easy to foresee Brice on an NFL roster in the future considering his dimensions and on-field production. Standing at 6-2, 233 pounds, Brice was arguably the best defensive player for the team even though he was sidelined for three games.

In 2021, he amassed 58 total tackles, 3.5 for a loss, six quarterback hurries, and half a sack. During FAU’s NFL Pro Day, he ran a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash and was electric in his various drills and even got some talks from scouts after the event.

John Mitchell

Another standout from Pro Day was wide receiver turned tight end John Mitchell, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

It’ll be hard to imagine Mitchell not being in an FAU uniform after spending six seasons with the program, but the work has paid off.

At Pro Day, he ran a 4.59 40-yard dash in the wind, a 36.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-toot-2-inch broad jump. Listed at 6-4, his size should have warranted him looks alone, but his offensive production was also impressive.

Mitchell started at receiver until FAU head coach Willie Taggart moved him to tight end, giving more experience as a blocker. He should be competing to be third in the depth chart behind Will Dissly and the recently-acquired Noah Fant as part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

Zaire Mitchell-Paden

Tight end Zaire Mitchell-Paden warranted attention from different NFL teams as he’s 6-5, 267 pounds and that physical prowess eventually led to his signing with the Cleveland Browns.

While he didn’t see much time on the offensive side catching passes, his size helped in blocking in run and pass protection. Even though he only ended with nine catches for 90 yards and a touchdown in the 2021 season, he was more prominent at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. During his four seasons there, he recorded 90 receptions for 1206 yards.

He’ll join former FAU tight end Harrison Bryant in the position room either catching passes from new quarterback Deshaun Watson or depending on suspension, predicted backup Jacoby Brissett.

Desmond Noel

The Cincinnati Bengals have added extra help to their offensive line as they signed Desmond Noel on Saturday evening.

A Cincinnati native, Noel won’t be too far from home as he’ll have the chance of protecting starting Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Representing FAU, he’ll be with former Owls defensive end Trey Hendrickson who had his best statistical season of his professional career, earning an NFL Pro Bowl selection.

Noel joined the team in 2019 and has been a mainstay on the Owls offensive line ever since. He earned Conference USA honorable mentions and was on the preseason all-CUSA list before the 2020 season.

He started 12 games in 2021 and specialized in playing left guard for FAU through his time. Taggart took to social media and applauded the news of Noel signing with the Bengals, “Congrats @IGOHARD65 [Noel’s Twitter handle].”
