What are your favorite memories of off-roading at the Oceano Dunes? We want your stories

In just a few months, off-road riding at the Oceano Dunes will be no more.

As that deadline approaches, we want to recognize the memories experienced by thousands of people who have flocked to the Dunes’ sandy slopes over the years.

The Tribune wants to hear your favorite stories of visiting the popular off-highway vehicle park near Pismo Beach as part of our new nostalgia series.

“Remember That?” looks back at some of the highlights of San Luis Obispo County’s recent past. We’re focusing primarily on the last 30 to 50 years, searching for favorite experiences that forever hold a place in residents’ memories.

In coming months, we’ll share throwback pictures from our archives, reader memories and in-depth features on a slew of Central Coast topics.

Most recently, we took a look at San Luis Obispo’s long-defunct indoor mall, Central Coast Plaza.

Now, we’re pivoting to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

Though the park as we know it was in operation by roughly the 1970s, people have been driving on the Dunes practically as long as there have been vehicles.

Now that practice is coming to an end.

The California Coastal Commission voted in 2021 to prohibit off-highway vehicle use at Oceano Dunes SVRA by 2024 — capping off a nearly 40-year battle.

Through the years, thousands of people have visited the OHV park for camping and ATV riding, forming memories along the way.

Fill out the form below, or send your stories of enjoying the Oceano Dunes to Tribune reporter Kaytlyn Leslie at kleslie@thetribunenews.com to have them featured in an upcoming story. We know you’ve got lots of great photos as well, and we want to see those too.

Have a suggestion for other nostalgic memories from SLO County’s history you want us to dive into? Send those recommendations along as well. We can’t wait to see what you all dig up.
