A quick list of our top toaster oven picks:

Serious Eats staffers have long loved Breville’s Smart Oven line of toaster ovens—more than half of us have one of these models on our kitchen counters right now. The Breville Smart Oven is currently our favorite toaster oven under $250, and the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer was one of our air fryer toaster oven top picks. It’s not hard to see why these models keep acing our tests—with excellent temperature stability, a wide temperature range, and an easy-to-use interface, we dare say they perform better than some full-size ovens.

“The Breville Smart Oven heats quickly and is much easier to clean than my regular oven. If I have to choose between the two, I’m going with the Breville,” says updates editor Jacob Dean. So, when we found out the entire Smart Oven line is going on sale from March 27th through April 10th, we just had to highlight our favorite models.

Breville Smart Oven

Serious Eats / Will Dickey

To buy: Breville Smart Oven was $270, now $216 at amazon.com

Why we love it: As our favorite toaster oven, the original Breville Smart Oven gives you a lot of bang for your buck. It can toast, roast, bake, and broil, and its temperature never strayed 15ºF from its set target. “It's become my go-to oven for almost anything I can fit in it, which is a fair amount given its generous size,” says senior culinary director Daniel Gritzer. We liked the easy-to-read interface, and the dial controls for mode, time, and temperature. Plus, it automatically shuts off when the timer hits zero—a nice little perk to cut down on energy use.

Breville Smart Oven Pro

<p>Breville</p>

Breville

To buy: Breville Smart Oven Pro was $350, now $224 at amazon.com

Why we love it: Nearly identical to the original Smart Oven, the Breville Smart Oven Pro adds two key features: a slow cook mode and an internal light. Though we haven’t officially tested it, this is a model multiple Serious Eats staffers own and use on a daily basis. The slow cook mode is a nice addition for braises (it can run up to 10 hours before automatically switching over to its keep warm function) and the internal light is key for checking the color of toast or a roast chicken. Normally, these features have been small upgrades for a pretty big price jump but, on sale (at a slightly larger discount of 35%), we think this model is a great step up from the Smart Oven.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

<p>Serious Eats / Will Dickey</p>

Serious Eats / Will Dickey

To buy: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer was $349, now $280 at amazon.com

Why we love it: Incrementally building on previous models, the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer has the same features as the Smart Oven Pro, but adds a more powerful fan and an air fryer setting. It’s one of our favorite air fryer toaster ovens for all the same reasons why the Smart Oven is our top toaster oven—consistent temperatures and an easy-to-use interface—only this version comes with an air fryer mode and basket. While we still recommend getting both a separate toaster oven and air fryer if you have the counter space, if you’re looking for an all-in-one appliance and roast more than you air fry, this model takes the cake.

Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro

<p>Serious Eats / Grace Kelly</p>

Serious Eats / Grace Kelly

To buy: Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro was $550, now $440 at breville.com

Why we love it: This really is a do-it-all toaster oven; in our tests, it air fried, roasted, baked, dehydrated, and toasted with aplomb. While we didn't use the app quite so much, many users have found it helpful and with plenty of recipe inspiration. The temperature range is also a bit wider than other toaster ovens, allowing you to get a nice char or cook low and slow.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

<p>Amazon</p>

Amazon

To buy: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro was $400, now $320 at amazon.com

Why we love it: Though we didn’t test this specific model, it’s extremely similar to the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro that won over associate commerce editor Grace Kelly. “Its air fryer mode is great at crisping up fries, and its super convection fan feature ensures ultra-crispy chicken skin whenever I throw in a roaster,” she says. While the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro lacks the app connectivity that the Joule version does, it features the same expanded temperature range and super convection fan mode. On top of the additional power, this oven also adds a dehydrate and proof function, which drops the temp down to 80ºF. This option makes this model extra helpful for bakers who need a warm spot for their sourdough starter.
