Fayetteville man wins 2 NC lottery prizes after accidentally playing the same numbers twice

Luck accidentally struck twice for a Fayetteville man after he bought two identical Lucky for Life lottery tickets for Saturday's drawing.

Scotty Thomas, 49, couldn't remember if he'd filled out his ticket, so he did it again.

“I was just laying in bed watching a basketball game on TV and I couldn’t remember if I filled it out or not,” Thomas told NC Lottery officials. “I went ahead and filled it out again and the next morning my son asked why there were two different amounts listed. I realized, ‘I think I filled it out twice.’”

In the end, Thomas bought two $2 tickets using the lottery's Online Play program and won the second-biggest prize – $25,000 a year for life.

“When I realized I won, I had to lay down on the floor because I really just couldn’t believe it,” Thomas said. “It’s just a blessing.”

Thomas chose the lump sum payment of $390,000 for both, for a total of $780,000 or $551,851 after taxes.
