The Fayetteville Observer Forum: Roe v. Wade may be overturned. What is your reaction?

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court debated a case out of Mississippi that could affect Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

Based on discussion among the justices, some analysts predict Roe will be overturned or severely undermined when the decision is handed down next year. Comments by conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who is a key swing vote, suggested he might be willing to overturn long-term precedent in the case.

In 1973, the Court backed Jane Roe (the name is a pseudonym) in her case against a Texas law that made abortion illegal. In some legal circles, the case is seen as hinging on whether a person has a constitutional right to privacy.

Legal and political wrangling over the decision has roiled in the decades since Roe was decided. Donald Trump may have tipped the balance by appointing three conservative justices during his single term as president. Justice Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed by the Republican-majority U.S. Senate just days before the November 3, 2020, presidential election, in which Trump lost to Joe Biden.
