The Fayetteville Observer Forum: What do you think of the Supreme Court decision on abortion?

On Friday, June 24, 2022, conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision ended federal protection for abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992).

The decision moved the issue back to the states, where there are a patchwork of laws pertaining to abortion. More than 20 states have already banned abortion or are likely to ban it in the near future, according to an analysis in Fortune. Several states have on the books so-called  “trigger laws” — that were designed to impose bans as soon as Roe was overturned.

In North Carolina, abortion remains legal, but a tightening of restrictions could be in the works. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger sent a letter to Attorney General Josh Stein telling him to reinstate a law that banned abortion after 20 weeks. The Republican-controlled General Assembly passed the measure in 2019 but it was blocked by a federal appeals court judge on the basis of Roe v. Wade.
