Who are your immediate family members?

My husband, Shaveas; my parents, Josh and Sheila Miles; my son Ayden is my most prized possession; my maternal grandmother, Ollie McLaughlin (age 95); and my paternal grandmother, Mary Miles (age 88).

What does your job entail?

As a clinical licensed therapist, I treat mental health. Mental health is how we live, how we love and how we laugh. Every human being has mental health; it's no different than physical health. However, not everyone has a mental illness. Daily, I meet people where they are and provide them with tools to become a version of themselves they are pleased with. I'm a therapist, consultant, clinical supervisor, speaker, mentor, advisor and health coach. I wear a lot of hats, but they all have one common goal. My goal is to give people a place to connect with a mental health professional in a judgment-free atmosphere. I strive to do ordinary things extraordinary.

Where did you receive your education?

Bachelor of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke; Master of Social Work from Fayetteville State University; master's in Human Resource Development from Webster University

What community and professional groups are you affiliated with?

I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Hoke County Civic League.

How do you volunteer your time in the community?

I host an annual turkey giveaway in November so that families have something for their dinner table. Every living being needs food. On Christmas Day, I feed the homeless hot dinners. I also provide grief counseling for those who have lost a loved one due to a traumatic event. My passion is comforting people when the challenges of life have caused them to feel hopeless.

What is one thing you wish people knew or understood better about your profession?

The one thing I wish people knew and understood about mental health therapists is: we have fears, roadblocks, weaknesses and family. We are all a work in progress as human beings. Healing is not a destination, it's an ongoing process and a lifelong journey.

What's the best advice you've ever received and/or the worst advice you've ever followed?

I'd have to say the best advice I have ever received came from my 95-year-old grandmother. Since elementary school she instilled in me "Nothing beats a failure but a try" and to always live by the golden rule.

What goal have you already achieved, and how did you make it happen?

I've always wanted to be in good physical shape. In July of last year, I signed a lifelong contract with myself to stay focused on my goals, move my body and eat healthier. My contract is still standing strong. I can run a mile in 6 minutes, I now have a home gym and gym membership. I think signing a lifelong contract with myself has helped me hold myself accountable for putting me first. One hour is only 4% of my day. Daily, I make sure I give myself 4%. I deserve it.

If you weren't in your current profession, what would you be?

If I weren't a psychotherapist I would be a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

What are five things (not people or pets) you can't live without?

God, music, self-love, nature and inner peace

What's something you do outside of work to enrich yourself?

I'm intentional about exercising at least five times a week, I enjoy reading, and I love traveling with my family creating memories.
