Fayetteville urges residents to prepare as Hurricane Idalia approaches North Carolina coast

In preparation for Hurricane Idalia, Fayetteville residents are encouraged to prepare for the potential impacts of the storm.

"The City is taking measures to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of services like filling vehicles and preparing equipment if the need arises to respond to resident requests," a news release said.

The National Weather Service expects heavy rainfall and gusty winds across portions of the Sandhills on Wednesday evening and Thursday. Weather-related information will be shared on the city’sFacebook and Twitter accounts during severe weather events, the release said.

To minimize the risk of flooding, residents are encouraged to check storm drains near their homes and either remove obstructions and debris or report it using the FayFixit App. the release said. For ways to prepare for flooding, visit FayettevilleNC.gov/Flood.

Information on adverse weather preparedness can be found at fayettevillenc.gov/storm or faypwc.com/Storm-Central/.

Residents are encouraged to download the ReadyNC app and FEMA app, which have preparedness tips to create a 72-hour emergency kit, the release said. The website includes public service announcements, storm preparation links, utility contacts, social media links, power outage information and the N.C. Department of Transportation Road Status database.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up for Cumberland Alerts, an emergency notification system, to receive critical weather information. Sign up by visiting cumberlandcountync.gov/emergencyservices and clicking on “Cumberland Alerts.”

Residents can call 910-433-1FAY (1329) or visit the city website for answers concerning service delays or City office closures.

At this time, the city's buses, Fayetteville Area System of Transit, and Solid Waste routes will operate as normal.

TheFayetteville Regional Airport will operate on a normal schedule. Flight cancellations will be on a case-by-case basis determined by the carrier. Visit flyfay.com for updated airport information.

Emergency shelters will be initiated by Cumberland County’s Emergency Services, should the need arise, the release said. For information about emergency shelters, visit cumberlandcountync.gov/emergencyservices then click the “Emergency Shelters” button.
