Fayetteville's J. Harrison Ghee named LGBTQ+ trailblazer by Out Magazine

Fayetteville native J. Harrison Ghee, who made history earlier this year by becoming one of the first openly nonbinary actors to win a Tony Award, has been named one of Out Magazine's Out100 for 2023.

The LGBTQ+ magazine's annual awards, announced Oct. 17, honor the year's most impactful and influential LGBTQ+ people, according to its website.

“Queer visibility is something I cherish and being able to make that space not only for myself but for others in the world is so important to me," Ghee said in the Out100 profile

Ghee, who graduated from E.E. Smith High School, is featured alongside people such as "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts; actor, comedian and host Wayne Brady; musician Kim Petras; and "RuPaul's Drag Race" star Sasha Colby.

Ghee won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for their performance in "Some Like It Hot." Ghee and Alex Newell were the first openly nonbinary actors to win Tony awards. Newell won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for their performance as Lulu in the musical comedy "Shucked."

“For every trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming human who ever was told you couldn't be, you couldn't be seen, this is for you,” Ghee said in accepting their award June 11 at the 76th annual Tony Awards in New York.
