FBI Indianapolis names Herbert J. Stapleton as new top agent

The FBI's headquarters in Indianapolis has a new top agent.

Herbert J. Stapleton, an 18-year FBI veteran with extensive experience investigating cyber crimes, was named the special agent in charge of the Indianapolis field office. The role was announced by the FBI on Monday morning nearly three months after the office's last head, Paul Keenan, retired.

Stapleton joined the FBI in 2004. He began his career out of the St. Louis field office. While there, he investigated public corruption, bank robberies, child exploitation and financial crimes.

Four years later he began working out of the Chicago field office, investigating transnational organized crime. In 2011, he transferred to FBI headquarters in Washington to work for the law enforcement agency's Cyber Division.

He returned to the Midwest in 2014 when he took on a role as a supervisory special agent at the Cincinnati field office. In Ohio, he continued his work on cyber crimes, and also worked on intelligence and crisis management.

His last role before coming to Indianapolis was as a deputy assistant director at the cyber division at FBI's headquarters in Washington. He also acted as the director of the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force.

Stapleton was an attorney prior to joining the FBI. He received his bachelor's degree from Centre College in Kentucky, and his law degree from the University of Kentucky.

The FBI's Indianapolis field office conducts investigations into federal crimes across the entire state of Indiana.
