FBI: Man from Lenoir made racist threats to Buffalo Police Department

Someone made racist threats toward people in the Buffalo, New York, Police Department, and federal authorities say they were able to track the threats to a man in Lenoir, North Carolina.

The threats were made between Aug. 18 and Aug. 26, according to court documents filed earlier this month and obtained by Channel 9 on Tuesday.

An agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrote in an affidavit that a member of the Buffalo Police Department got a call from a man who identified himself as Ryan Johnston. Court documents say Johnston “became noticeably angry” and called the department over 50 times from a cell phone on Aug. 18.

Investigators say in court documents that Johnston made a racist threat against one police receptionist. He allegedly told the department he would go to Buffalo to shoot officers, and reportedly stated that he would kill any Black people, while using a racial slur.

Several days later, on Aug. 26, Johnston allegedly called the department again and made similar threats to police officers.

The FBI started investigating and tracked the phone number to Ryan Michael Dewitte Johnston, who lives in Lenoir, North Carolina.

According to online jail records, Johnston was booked into custody in the Catawba County Jail on Monday. He’s facing federal charges for making the threats.
