FBI’s Wray Says Classified Documents Laws ‘Are There for a Reason’

(Bloomberg) -- FBI Director Christopher Wray said the mishandling of classified records is a recurring problem for his agency’s counterintelligence division and that people need to be more aware of the rules.

“People need to be conscious of the rules regarding classified information and the appropriate handling of it,” Wray said in response to a reporter’s question in Washington Thursday. “Those rules are there for a reason.”
President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have had materials marked as containing some of the nation’s secrets found at their private homes this year. Those discoveries have resulted in Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of special counsels for the Trump and Biden cases.
Those findings at the homes of some of the nation’s former and current top officials have raised concerns that the system for accounting for classified information in the executive branch may be broken.
“I can’t comment on any specific investigation,” Wray said. “But we have had for quite a number of years any number of mishandling investigations. That is unfortunately at regular part of our counterintelligence division’s and counterintelligence program’s work.”
